This comes even so when Eritrea’s flight ban is being seen as an attempt to obstruct surveillance by UN Peace keeping forces, in areas bordering Ethiopia. Kofi Annan’s call that both sides “exercise maximum restrain” is significant considering the fact that the two-year border war between them from 1998 to 2000, which according to Brussels based International Crisis Group (ICG) took 100,000 lives, notwithstanding the tremendous human sufferings that both the sides witnessed during Eritrea’s long armed struggle for self-determination, that lasted for over 25 years.
